Make a pumpkin lantern

As the autumn days shorten and night comes earlier with the approach of Halloween evening, here's a pumpkin lantern to carry around like a lantern in the garden and nearby streets. A quick and easy Halloween craft for children to enjoy. Our pumpkin lantern is decorated with orange ribbons, personalized by a little girl. For more daring boys, we can consider a pumpkin head without ribbon, but with a more frightening look...

All you need to make this lantern is a little bit of salvaging:
- an A4 sheet of paper, either white to be printed on (in which case, use the colored Pumpkin template), or orange (in which case, use the outlined Pumpkin template), or cardboard to be painted orange by the children (in which case, print out the outlined template, hollow it out and transfer it to the cardboard)
- a medium-sized glass jar (for jam, for example)
- a tea light
- a little over a metre of fine wire
- a thin stick
- possibly an orange ribbon
- possibly small beads or a bit of gravel.

Cutting the pumpkin head

Cutting the toothless pumpkin head
Cut out the pumpkin head, and use scissors to hollow out the eyes, nose and toothless smile. Cut out a second head shape, which may or may not also be hollowed out: depending on whether you want the light to be diffused on both sides. Make 2 small holes at the top of the "forehead", 2 cm apart.

Assembling the pumpkin head

Attaching pumpkin heads
Tie a metre of wire around the top of the glass jar (the length of each end should be approximately equal). Pass each wire through one of the small holes, then pass the wire through the other hole. Tie the wires on the opposite side of the jar.
Making the lantern handle
Assemble the other "head" and tie around the top of the pot. Make a handle by doubling the threads, twisting them and tying them on each side. Cut off any protruding threads, then fold the prickly ends under the other threads.

Tie the sides of the pumpkin heads

Pumpkin lantern with orange ribbons
Cut a hole in the head and side parts to join them together, either with a small piece of wire or, as for our special girl's lantern, with a long orange ribbon... Place the candle at the bottom of the jar. To prevent it from slipping, you can first pour either fine gravel or small transparent pearls into the bottom of the jar to reflect the candlelight.
Wrap the remaining wire (or a small piece of thicker wire) around the end of the stick, then make a hook. The lantern can be safely carried around by the children, hanging from the end of the stick.
