Hanging Christmas Angel in silver wire

A large Christmas hanging, an angel of crystal and silver wire, with a large star tassel at its heart.

The structure is made of thick silver wire, while the thin silver wire is twisted to suspend the pendants. For this very fancy decoration, the pendants are in transparent acrylic, and imitate crystal pendants.

This creation can be made with children; the steps are not difficult, but patience is required. Several hours were needed for this 20 cm high angel.

Supplies

I used silver wire of 3 different diameters: - a thick wire of 1mm diameter (gauge 18) - a medium wire of 0.64mm diameter (gauge 22) - a thin wire of 0.32mm diameter (gauge 28) I need at least 2 wires of different thicknesses, the thicker used for the structure, the thinner for twisted wire effects. A silver-plated steel wire, less expensive, can of course be used.
I also need: - baroque-shaped clear acrylic pendants (16mm high), I used 16 of them, - a 55mm-diameter star pendants, - about a hundred 4mm Crystal ab faceted beads, - a 20mm wooden bead, a smaller 8mm one, - some nylon thread, - about ten "silvered" crush beads.

Structure fabrication

angel structure in steel wire
In the thickest silver or steel wire, make 4 circles in the following diameters: 2.5 cm, 6 cm, 8 cm, 10 cm. Simply cut a length of wire, wind it around itself for 1 to 2 cm for the largest circle, and hold it in place by tightly winding a very thin piece of wire.
Angel structure attachment
Cut a 24 cm length of medium-thick wire. Pass it through the small wooden bead, and tightly wind the piece of wire (which protrudes by about 2 cm), so that it is hidden by the large wooden bead representing the angel's head. Then attach this wire to the smallest ring made (which will be the top of the dress), winding it several times.
Then attach the rings one after the other, spacing them evenly. You'll notice that the last ring has a more flared shape towards the front, to give more volume to the dress when viewed from the front.

Wing structure

Structure of the angel's wings
Using a good length of the thickest wire, you can make the wing structure in one piece. You can help yourself by drawing the shape you want on a sheet of paper, then outlining it by gradually twisting the steel wire. The wires are then twisted together in an area that is not very visible.

Filling structures

Fill the wings with twisted wires
With the medium thread, mark out spaces in the wing structure: twist one end of the thread on the edge of the structure, cross diagonally, twist again on the edge and so on.
With the thinnest thread, do the same but draw smaller spaces, twisting the thread on itself in places, adding a faceted crystal bead on the thread above. The same "filling" should be done on the angel's dress: first delimit areas by placing medium threads vertically from one ring to the next. Then place the fine wires by threading here or to a faceted bead, crossing them.
Angel's head in twisted wire
A fine, twisted wire (with a fine pen or round-tipped jewelry pliers) is placed around the collar and another in the small wooden bead.

Adding tassels

Tassels on the angel's dress
Once the dress has been made, it's time to place the tassels. The "large star" tassel is placed in the dress, under the head, using a piece of fine thread: the star must be placed in the center. Then, the small baroque tassels are suspended from the bottom ring of the dress by a fine thread twisted more or less irregularly around the ring. Long strands of faceted beads ending in a tassel are placed from the penultimate ring. To do this, a nylon thread is passed through a tassel, then both ends of the thread pass through 17 to 22 facets (each string being of different length), then through a crush pearl. The threads are then passed over the ring, then again through the crush pearl and a few facets. Once the wires have been adjusted, the crush bead is tightened and the wires cut.
