Making a salvaged Christmas wreath

You don't need to be a crafting pro to make a Christmas wreath from recycled materials, to hang on your door as a Welcome at the beginning of December. In Christian tradition, the Advent wreath is a countdown to Christmas Day, made up of 4 candles representing the 4 weeks of Christmas. The tradition has spread, and the Christmas wreath, which used to be made from fir branches, is now made from garlands, fabrics, rafias, recycled materials ...
Homemade Christmas wreath
Wicker straw wreath
The wreath used to support the Christmas decoration can be of different kinds:
- from tightly-wound straw, wrapped in elastic string, as found in hobby stores, - from flexible insulation tubing: simply cut to length, store the two ends together to form a circle - from salt dough (but it will only be possible to roll elements onto the wreath, not to hold them in place by sticking needles), because of the thickness of the cylinder, the salt dough wreath will need to be baked for a long time - from newspaper: sheets of recycled newspaper are shaped into a wreath and held together with craft paper tape: it's easy to do yourself and very economical! But the wreath must then be completely covered to hide the tape.

Crown decoration

Detail of homemade salvaged wreath
To decorate the wreath, first a garland of green ivy is rolled up, then a garland of fir leaves and finally 2 classic reflective garlands (or pieces of garland too short to be used for the tree).
Other decorations, picked up here and there, add volume and personality to this example wreath: fabric elves (or other Christmas tree hangers such as our felt hangers or beaded hangers), a bell hanger, a large raffia bow and pine cones quickly spray-painted gold.

How to attach a wreath?

If there isn't already a nail in the middle of the door, you'll need a few tricks to place the wreath on the door without damaging it by hammering in a nail or hook. One trick is to place a thumbtack in the middle of the top edge of the door, over which a thin ribbon (or thick nylon thread, depending on the weight of the wreath) is threaded and then tied to the wreath. This way, the flat thumbtack doesn't prevent the door from closing. Another trick is to attach the top of the crown to a wide ribbon and wrap the whole door around this ribbon, which then attaches to the bottom of the crown: this way, the door is unharmed!
