A wreath for a natural Christmas

A Christmas wreath to hang on the front door, all in natural materials: wood, terracotta, leather. Not only pretty, it's also useful, as the melodious sound of the bells (wood against terracotta) serves as an entrance chime. The natural look, with no "Christmas" colors, means it can be kept as a decoration all winter long.
Natural wreath

Hardware

Material for the Christmas wreath
  • a braided vine wreath (make your own with still-soft vine oaths, or buy as is for decoration)
  • a 6 cm-diameter terracotta pot, 3 4 cm-diameter pots
  • 2 natural leather hearts (5 cm diameter)
  • large natural wooden beads : one 3 cm in diameter, 3 2 cm in diameter
  • around 40 small 5 mm and one 8 mm dark wood beads
  • brown and natural leather cords (approx. 1.5 m each)
  • brown thread and needle

Positioning the beads on the crown

Arrange the pearls on the crown
Pass the thread through the needle and attach it to the back of the wreath. Pass the needle across the front of the wreath, through the branches, and through a small wooden bead. The needle returns to the back of the wreath or a few centimetres further on: the bead is thus held firmly in place. And again, thread a small bead, every 2 to 3 centimetres... This way, the thread is almost invisible and the beads are scattered all over the front of the wreath.

Bell making

Christmas bell jar
To make a small bell, take a piece of leather lace about 30 cm long in beige leather (35 cm for the small bell in the center with the brown leather). Tie a knot at the end and thread a wooden bead (2 cm in diameter for small pots) through it. Tie a knot 3 cm higher and pass the lace through the small terracotta pot: the wooden bead should be half visible (it should tinkle against the rim of the pot). Tie a knot just outside the pot to secure the bead. Pass the lace through the branches of the wreath and secure the loop with a sailor's overhand knot, then pass the end back into the pot (cut off if it protrudes from the pot).
Same principle for the large bell, using the 3 cm diameter bead, but before it, a smaller bead (8 to 10mm) to secure the lace (otherwise you'd have to make a double knot with the leather lace, which wouldn't look very pretty). Choosing a dark wood pearl creates a nice contrast with the natural tones of the pearl and the pot. This large bell is tied short so as to fill all the space inside the wreath.

Natural leather heart
Next, the natural leather hearts are suspended by brown leather laces (if leather is not available, natural wooden hearts can also be used, both for their color and their natural material). Finally, a loop made with the 2 leather laces together allows you to hang this simple, natural wreath from your door.
