Christmas characters in wooden spoon and felt

Funny Christmas characters, a naughty angel and Santa Claus himself, come to life from a wooden spoon, felt and a bit of paint...

Equipment used

For the angel :
- a 30 cm long round wooden spoon
- thick felt (for the dress) in white, yellow and a little red
- angel hair (aptly named!)
- gold embroidery thread
- fine brass thread
For Santa :
- a 30 cm-long pointed wooden spatula,
- air-hardening modelling clay (or salt dough)
For the two figures: a little paint and a fine black marker for painting on wood.

Start by painting the tops of the two spoons pale pink (two coats may be necessary). While the paint dries, start cutting...

Making a felt angel

punching holes in the angel's dress
Cut out the angel's "dress" in duplicate from white felt, then cut out the wings (from a single piece of yellow felt) and finally a red heart and a small yellow heart for decoration. on both sides of the dress, punch holes at regular intervals using eyelet pliers (or a cookie cutter), taking care to punch holes on both sides of the dress at the same time, and using strong cardboard for support. The holes will make it easy to pass the gold embroidery thread (which is made a little stiff by its metallic appearance) but will also contribute to the angel's decoration.
angel's wing in yellow felt
Make 4 holes in the piece of felt representing the wings, using the 4 highest holes already made in the dress as a reference. Fasten the wings to the back of the dress by passing the edging thread through these 4 holes.
sewing the angel's dress
Sew the angel's dress, starting at the bottom, using a round-tipped embroidery needle.

Using the brass wire, make a small spiral (by threading it onto a small pencil...) and a long spiral with a larger diameter. Attach the small heart to the larger one via the small spiral. Attach the long spiral to both sides of the large heart: it will be threaded around the angel's neck.

The face of the angel

Spoon angel face
Draw the eyes, eyebrows, little nose and big smile with the fine black marker (practice on a sheet of paper to find the expression you like).Using a small piece of paper towel in a ball, apply a touch of red paint to the cheeks. Glue a tuft of angel hair to the top of the spoon. After drying, cut the hair with fine scissors! Insert the spoon into the dress and arrange the spiral with the two hearts.

With a thick piece of felt, you can cut off the part of the spoon handle that sticks out and place the angel directly on the Christmas table...

Spoon Santa

Paint the top of the spatula (whose pointy shape fits Santa's beanie-clad head) and the handle bright red.
Draw the eyes, nose and mouth. The background of the eyes is painted white, the mouth red.
Place the clay in such a way as to form the back of the hat, the pompom at the end of the hat, the beard (which starts at the back of the hat and runs down the handle of the spatula) and then the moustache, which comes on top of the beard. Prick the paste to give it a nice furry look.
Let the paste dry and let it harden in the open air.
