A Christmas bauble mobile

Christmas bauble mobile
Here's how to make a pop-colored mobile from transparent or solid balls, painted using different techniques and suspended from a crown. The combination of different techniques and materials makes this mobile an original support for all kinds of different balls. These balls can also be joined together in a suspension by ribbons held together by cinnamon sticks.
suspended balls
Materials
  • 4 transparent balls 7 cm in diameter
  • 2 polystyrene balls (8 and 12 cm in diameter)
  • a polystyrene wreath (20 cm in diameter)
  • orange metallic gift paper
  • unbleached bolduc
  • and depending on the technique used for each ball: paint on glass, glitter glue, glitter powder, scrap pad, flock
  • ...

Making the crown

Mobile crown
All the baubles hang from the Styrofoam wreath.
The wreath can be decorated in matching tones:
- either by covering it with strips of metallic star-orange wrapping paper, which will be held in place by a long bolduc wrapped around the wreath
- or by covering it with strips of fabric fastened with pins stuck into the polystyrene
- or by painting it like the red polystyrene glitter ball.
Transparent balls are suspended by their ties, while expanded polystyrene balls are suspended by a long piece of bloduc that crosses over each other like a gift-wrapped package.

Making a scrap ball

Transparent ball
Here, a transparent ball is decorated with two colors of stamp (usually used in scrapbooking): a pointed Olive-shaped stamp in "bisque" color (actually golden mustard) and a square stamp in Lime color (actually old rose). Open the transparent ball and on each side, domed side, first draw a frieze of triangles all around the edge, using half the square stamp.
Be careful, this type of paint is very greasy and you need to wait for it to dry before continuing to decorate the ball, to avoid smudging.
On the top of each side of the ball (with half the ball lying flat), draw a star using the special shape of the pointed Olive stamp.

Directly using the tip of a tube of clear glue with gold glitter, draw the outline of the star, then arabesques between the star and the triangles on the edge.
Let dry.

Making a flock ball

flock gluing on large ball
The "flock paint" chips in assorted colors make decorating baubles easy and original. Simply sprinkle the flock on a cardboard plate, glue the ball with varnish-glue and roll it in the plate. Repeat after drying to homogenize the chips.
After further drying, the ball can even be sanded!

Make a spiral Christmas bauble
Glitter is in! Here are two ways to use finely powdered glitter.

Christmas baubles withspiral decorations: visual effect guaranteed!

Draw a spiral on the inside of each face directly with the tip of a glass paint bottle (here white with silver glitter). Let dry.
spray the inside of each face with a varnish-glue spray. Wait 2 minutes (for the glue to develop) and sprinkle with glitter (here copper-colored glitter).
let dry again.
Plain ball with copper glitter
For a luminous ball: paint the inside of both sides of a transparent ball with Pebéo Vitrea 160 glass paint in Paprika color, applying with a fine sponge. Immediately afterwards, sprinkle evenly with copper flake powder.
You can also decorate the outside of the balls with tubes of glitter glue - kids love it!
