A garland of pennants in the garden

Here's an easy way to make a garland of openwork paper pennants for a cheerful, decorative effect on a terrace, a corner of the garden, a party room. The pennants can match the colors chosen for the party, or even the main theme, as in this case the Provence theme, with openwork cicadas on the pennants. With pennants cut out with the letters of a first name, the event, the age for a birthday, or the initials of the bride and groom, the garland is totally personalized!

The size of a pennant should be around 20 cm high, to be effective as an outdoor decoration or for a large hall.
The garland shown here was made with finely cut Cicada pennants in matching colors.

Make your own pennants

Making a pennant template
First, make a cutting template by tracing a right-angled triangle on a sheet of slightly thick paper, 20 cm high and 7.5 cm at its base. Fold the sheet along the 20 cm straight line, and cut out. Opening the cut sheet, you obtain a triangle 20 cm high and 15 cm at its base.
This template is then transferred to patterned or plain paper. Use a minimum paper thickness of 160g, as many paper colors are available in this thickness. Transfer the triangle shape to the back of the paper, then cut carefully. Use a hole punch to cut 2 round holes in each of the 2 top corners of the pennant.

Making the pennant banner

Once the pennants are ready (whether you've cut them yourself or ordered them), thread them onto a 4 to 6 mm thick cord at regular intervals. Pay attention to the direction of threading: if the intended location for the garland (e.g. above the buffet table) means that only one side is visible, it's best to run the cord along the back of each pennant.
If you're using a small, slippery cord, you'll need to tie a knot before and after each pennant to ensure that the spacing between them remains fixed. !

At each end, leave at least twice as much space as there is between the pennants and make a loop: the loop will be easier to attach to a wall if the garland is intended for a room decoration. On the other hand, for terrace and garden decoration, it is better to leave a good length (at least 50 cm) at each end of the garland, so that it can be easily tied to a branch, a pergola...
