Hardware

Materials for broom custo
  • an all-wood broom: a recycled broom can do the trick (but you'll need to clean it with a brush),
  • D'clic Mosaïc mosaic, easy to cut, in saffron, orange, brick and antartic blue
  • ,
  • glue and jointing powder (it's best to use D'clic Mosaïc jointing powder, as other powders can give poor results)
  • ,
  • red, yellow and blue acrylic paint

Laying the mosaic

Laying the mosaic on the broom
D'clic Mosaïc comes in pre-cut pieces of various shapes. As a result, there's virtually no cutting involved. Only the 2 isosceles triangles on the left and right had to be cut, simply using the scissor blade and ruler as a guide.
Since these tesserae don't splinter, it's easy to make mosaics on the living-room table... To distribute the tesserae harmoniously, draw 2 cm vertical strips with a pencil, starting from the center of the broom towards the edges: this will ensure perfect symmetry. Then place the tesserae on the right-hand side: turn them, change places and, when the pattern is satisfactory, start gluing them. Do the same on the left. Then gradually work your way towards the center. There are only 5 blue mosaic tesserae, to match the color of the broom bristles: but the contrast is quite pleasing, especially for the handle. Once the glue has dried, you can apply the joint. The paste is obtained by mixing the powder with water. Simply fill the gaps between the tesserae with this joint, then wipe with a damp sponge before drying to remove the joint from the tesserae. once the joint is completely dry, rub with a soft cloth to obtain a beautiful shine on the tesserae.

Paint

Painting the broom handle
First, paint the edge of the broom, then the handle, in wide, irregular stripes. Don't try to place them horizontally, but at an angle, just as the tesserae are in triangles... With good acrylic paint (Jo sonja, for example), which covers well, a single coat is sufficient.

All that's left to do is assemble the brush and handle, and once the paint is dry, ...get to work!
