Making cardboard furniture

I use double- and triple-flute cardboard, as well as flat cardboard, to create functional, solid and waterproof furniture.

JAPANESE CARDBOARD COFFEE TABLE

Here's a Japanese-style coffee table in flat cardboard, which I recently made using a process that involves criss-crossing sheets of cardboard.

Furniture frame

I start by cutting profiles in the shape I want, 3 in all.
The intermediate profile is used to accommodate the crosspieces that will make up the furniture's framework, making it solid later on, a bit like the construction of boat hulls.
The 3 profiles must be assembled and glued together. Personally, I superimpose several sheets for greater strength, using 2 or 3 sheets for each profile, depending on the furniture and its future strength.

Furniture covering

When the profiles are assembled, I cover the whole with cardboard to close the cabinet.
As the glued kraft overlap progresses, the piece of furniture is built up step by step, making it solidify.

Coated furniture

Coating cardboard furniture
For the finishing touches, I coat the furniture with a homemade coating based on blanc de meudon. Here's the recipe for this coating: 9 parts blanc de meudon to 6 parts pva glue (white wood glue), 3 parts water, 1 spoonful linseed oil.
Then I paint the furniture (it can also be covered with handmade paper), but I prefer paint.
To protect and waterproof it, I varnish it with an aquarethane varnish. The furniture is now ready, protected from possible water-spray accidents, and heavy objects can be placed on it, as it can support up to 100 kg per m2.
