Decorating mugs for Christmas
Decorating and personalizing simple white porcelain mugs is easy and fun with the serviettage technique: a manual activity that can be practiced with children, each one creating THEIR own Christmas mug. The mug can also be used to elegantly offer small gifts or chocolates, always appreciated at Christmas. The mug can also be decorated with a homemade Christmas pearl decoration, simply tied to the handle with a twisted brass wire.
Hardware
- a white porcelain mug, or any other white porcelain or white ceramic object (fine earthenware cookies) to be discovered in the Figurines en céramique store
- porcelain varnish-glue, which has the advantage of being dishwasher-proof after firing. If you're decorating an object that comes into contact with food (e.g. a cake tin or plate), use a special "food contact" varnish-glue. To decorate the outside of a cup, simply avoid using varnish-glue on the rim of the cup (which may come into contact with the mouth).
- one or more paper napkins to cut out the motifs.
Serviettage on porcelain
The napkin-cutting technique always begins with the precise cutting of the napkin's motifs, and sharp scissors are needed to cut the motif as closely as possible (to be adapted according to the age of the children). Here, the napkin chosen represents cups decorated for Christmas.
Simply glue the area to be decorated with a brush, then carefully place the cut-out paper motif on top. Then apply a coat of varnish-glue to the motif, from the center to the edges (this helps to eliminate any small air bubbles).
The red and gold frieze on the napkin is also used to glue to the bottom edge of the cup.
The back of the cup is also decorated: practical when the cups are displayed in the kitchen suspended from a stand.
This type of varnish-glue must be baked in the oven to withstand washing, especially machine washing. Refer to the manufacturer's instructions on baking time and temperature. For safety reasons, ventilate the kitchen and oven thoroughly after baking.
