Beaded ornaments for the Christmas table

An idea that's sure to amaze your guests: crystal-beaded"baubles to place" on your Christmas table, elegant, decorative and fun all at once... Playful, because your guests will touch them, weigh them, turn them around in their hands and be amazed at their weight...

The technique is simple: attach crystal beads to a polystyrene ball using short pins.
you can draw a pattern, a star or striped lines, and you'll quickly get hooked!
Pearl bauble for the Christmas table
For a 6 cm diameter ball, you need approximately :
  • 340 3mm facets in Czech crystal (here, Crystal ab, Siam, golden bronze),
  • 300 4mm facets (here, half Crystal/half silver, dark Siam, Crystal ab),
  • a few 4mm spinning tops in Crystal Swarovski (the spinning top shape is ideal for this type of decoration, but the cost is higher),
  • as many short pins (650).

  • In fact, for pearls 3 to 4mm in diameter, you'll need between 5 and 6 pearls per cm2.
For an 8cm-diameter ball, you'll need around 1,150 beads.
If oval cabochons are used (the ones shown are red and made of Czech crystal), they need to be pierced at the top and bottom, with as many beads as the surface area of the cabochon.

Do you need an attachment?

Place the ribbon that serves as a fastener
If the ball is to be hung, it's best to plan the suspension before you start. Simply place a long ribbon around the ball and form a loop: hold the loop and ribbon together with a few pinned beads, then as the motifs cover the ball, the ribbon will be permanently attached to the ball. This way, the ribbon will make a solid suspension that will withstand the weight of the ball. Imagine a 6cm-diameter ball weighing 75g!

Production tips

Bead balls in various sizes
The idea is to place the large motif(s) you want, then complete with lines and arabesques, playing with colors and bead sizes.

Pearl ball Etoile

Christmas star bauble
To make a ball with a star motif, start with the star, using plain pearls, then surround the star with lines of contrasting pearls.
To place the cabochon motifs, fix each one with a pin at the top and bottom, placing them on the "equatorial" line, then surround them with a strand of plain pearls, then another, etc., and continue to fix cabochons on this same line.
