Making a light garland

Creating a garland of lights to match your interior decor is a creative project that takes on its full meaning as soon as you plug in the garland ... because the magic of the garland's diffused lights works immediately, illuminating a corner of the room, highlighting a home decor wall, wrapping around a piece of tall furniture...

Materials

  • a light garland ready to plug in (CE marking compulsory), either on mains or batteries
  • PVC sheets with motifs (a CreaPop specialty, for example), thickness 115 g/m2
  • stapler or hot-melt glue
  • our "plus": scissors, patterned punches
...

Lantern cutting

Choose the shape you'd like your lanterns to take from our range of templates: either cone-shaped (small or large), or lily-shaped (in which case the pattern has a rounded heart shape).

lampion cut-out for garland
Print out the pattern, cut it out and transfer it to the patterned PVC sheet as many times as there are bulbs on the garland.

Fixing the lanterns

The lampion is fixed to the base of the bulb socket, where the wires exit. The fixing must be tight around the wires so that the lampion is immobilized.

To fix the shape of the lantern, you can use a small stapler (quick and efficient, but not very attractive) or hot-melt glue, or plastic clips (also made by Creaopop) which you place after perforating the two parts to be assembled.

Our little ''PLUS'' decorations

An attractive effect is created simply by cutting the edges of the cone (once fixed) with serrated scissors.

You can also use a patterned punch (scrapbooking material) to cut out shapes in the outermost part of the cone (to avoid seeing the lit bulb through these holes). A star shape can be seen in the photo on the right, with the garland lit.

Even simpler!

Bag lantern
An even simpler and quicker way to create a lantern! Cut a rectangle about 4 cm wide and twice as long as the bulb (socket included), to which you add a good 1 cm (to prevent the lit bulb from touching the PVC). Fold this rectangle around the bulb, make a hole 5 mm from the edge and in the center, on the two pieces of PVC, and thread a Parisian staple through it, well between the 2 wires. The lantern is shaped like a handbag!
Always using notched scissors, cut the edges before fixing, for a pretty effect!

Precautions for use

Never leave a lit garland unattended. Beware of fumes that could be toxic when the materials used heat up (including glue or varnish-glue), and beware of flammable materials. Some people use sheets of colored tracing paper to make lampions, but it's best to rely on Créapop sheets, which are made expressly for lampion use.
