Renovating a bassinet cover

A bassinet customized to the colors and patterns of your baby's room, a cozy place for baby to sleep for up to 4 months. Newborns prefer small, snug sleeping spaces (hence the idea of the chenille comforter). The bassinet in woven palm leaves was bought for a few euros at a garage sale, then dressed in organic textiles and a small coconut-fiber mattress: natural materials enhanced by fabrics in lively colors! For baby's safety, check the sturdiness of the handles. Supplies Two contrasting fabrics, terry cloth, wool felt in three colors, ribbon and embroidery thread.

Dressing the sides of the bassinet

The bassinet cover is in 2 parts: one part is higher (at the head), which gave us the idea for this two-tone effect. The visible fabric (ecru or fuchsia) is in soft, thick organic jersey cotton. For a fleece effect, a recycled cotton bath towel was chosen. The principle is to cut two rectangles (one in the visible fabric, the other in the terry cloth) 2 cm larger lengthwise and heightwise. Place the reverse side of the visible fabric on the terry cloth, hold with pins and sew the two short sides and one long side. Remember to "break" the corners of the fabric covering the head of the bassinet to follow the bassinet's unhooking. Then turn over what looks like a cover. The unstitched part will be placed at the bottom, invisible to the mattress (but if the fabric frays, sew it back in place). Do the same for the other part of the bassinet, fuchsia, which is rectangular.

The sets

Dressing the bassinet with felt butterflies
Butterflies of various sizes are cut from wool felt in shades of pink, parma and dark purple. They are then sewn all over the two covering fabrics: leave the bottom 5 or 8 cm free, especially where baby will have his head, to prevent him from "head-butting" the butterflies... A single seam is sewn on the body of each butterfly so that the wings stand out from the fabric and give relief to these motifs.

Mounting the trim

The two parts, ecru and fuchsia, are joined together to form a ring. This ring is placed on the bassinet and held in place with clothespins. With a large needle and white thread, sew the upper part of the trim to the bassinet, passing the needle through the spaces between the palm leaves

Decoration and bows

Three embossed felt decorations are made for placement: on either side of the bassinet (where the two fabrics meet) and at the top of the bassinet, held in place by ribbons tied to the gingham pattern.
The main shape is first cut twice in felt (2 dark purple hearts, for example), then a motif to be placed on the shape is cut in felt of another color (a smaller heart, wings for the dragonfly...). Between the two identical shapes is placed padding (or small pieces of recycled felt), then the shapes are sewn together with embroidery thread of contrasting color (3 strands) in faux coarse stitches. The motif(s) are then sewn on, again with colored stitch effects.

Large felt butterfly
As the mattress is smaller than the bassinet, a small square cushion has been made to be placed at baby's feet. the cushion is made from strips of fabric scraps and decorated, once again, with a felt butterfly. The chenille comforter allows baby to cradle his head and give him kisses... As baby grows, the bassinet can be used to store comforters, dolls and other toys.
