Making a pennant garland

Here's an easy way to make a garland of pennants to decorate a baby's or toddler's room: the effect on the wall is particularly cheerful! The pennants can match the main colors of the room to be decorated, or even the main theme of the room. With pennants on which the letters of the child's first name are cut out, the garland is totally personalized and also makes a great made-to-measure gift idea.

Finely cut pennants with name letters
The size of a pennant for interior decoration can be 12 cm high. Any taller and the garland would take up too much space (so a larger size would be more suitable for outdoor decoration or a room with very high walls). The garland shown here was made with finely-cut flower and butterfly pennants, each pennant bearing the letter of the child's first name, in 3 assorted colors.

Make your own pennants

Making a pennant template
First, make a cutting template by tracing a 12 cm-high right-angled triangle with a 4.5 cm base on a sheet of slightly thick paper. Fold the sheet along the 12 cm straight line, and cut out. Opening the cut sheet, you obtain a triangle 12 cm high and 9 cm at its base.
This template is then transferred to patterned or plain paper. Use a minimum paper thickness of 160g, as many paper colors are available in this thickness. Transfer the triangle shape to the back of the paper, then cut carefully. Use a hole punch to cut 2 round holes in each of the 2 top corners of the pennant.

Making the garland

Once the pennants are ready (whether you've cut them yourself or ordered them), thread them onto a 2 to 3 mm thick cord at regular intervals. If you're using a small slippery cord, you'll need to tie a knot before and after each pennant so that their spacing remains fixed. At each end, leave double the space separating the pennants and make a loop. The garland is ready to be arranged as a decoration. Hint! A garland of pennants can be laid "flat" over the bed, for example, but it's even prettier at an angle, with each end on a wall, as this creates shadow effects when the room is lit up.

A personalized garland with name

Pennant garland for a girl's room
For our "very girly" garland, we used 2 lengths of pink scoubidou wire. The advantage is that the pennants don't slip. The 2 lengths of scoubidou thread are connected by a knot hidden behind the central pennant, and the other pennants are added on each side (respecting the order of the letters of the first name, of course!). A loop is made at each end, and the protruding thread is hidden behind the first pennant. The loop is then passed through a hook fixed to the wall. Example for our garland: it's made up of 8 pennants and measures 100 cm from one end to the other.
For boys, we can imagine designs more suited to "little guys", but which can also be personalized with their first name! All that's left is to match the paper colors...
