Porcelain and glass decoration, kiln firing

Supplies required

Colors: There are several brands on the market, the most complete being the Pébéo Porcelaine 150 and Pébéo Vitréa 160 ranges. There are different paint colors, felt-tips and contour rings. Brushes: Prefer short-haired brushes (pony rather than synthetic), round brushes for details, flat brushes for large surfaces. Brush sizes range from n°2 to n°10.

Substrate preparation

Degrease the object well with hot, soapy water. For glass, transfer a motif by transparency using a fine-tipped "permanent" felt-tip pen (not water-soluble), or transfer the motif freehand. For porcelain, you can paint directly onto the porcelain, or transfer a motif using transfer paper.

Paint effects

Paint the inside of the motifs with the chosen hue, using a brush or sponge and dabbing. For the sponge technique, cut a piece of kitchen sponge, pour a little paint into the cap and soak the sponge in it. Dab to obtain a more or less homogeneous melted effect.

Stained glass effect

Allow to dry thoroughly between colors.
When the motif is finished, use the supplied cannula to pass the hoop over the felt lines. This underlines the motif and adds relief, like stained glass. The range of hoop colours is wide: gold, silver, pearl, pink, black... Let dry for at least 24 hours.

Object baking

Always refer to the manufacturer's instructions. As a general rule, place the object on a rack in the cold domestic oven. Start up at the indicated temperature (150 to 160°C). You can use a special thermometer sold in paint shops. Bake for 1 hour, then leave your creations to cool in the oven. You can open the door to accelerate cooling. Once enamelled, your objects can be washed in the dishwasher, but it's better to use a less hot and less aggressive hand-wash.

Tool cleaning

If you need to remove a paint or felt-tip stain, use a little water or nail polish remover. Brushes can be rinsed with water.

Complementary products

Paint markers can be used like pencils to write or make fine patterns. Matt varnish gives a frosted effect. Transparent varnish can be mixed in small proportions with paints to lighten or thin them.
