Black and White Christmas board

Star flowers in soliflores around the Christmas "N" in a black-and-white hue complemented by the festive note of metallic grey. A multi-material effect (wood, pearls, snow, scoubidous) for this highly graphic, embossed décor.

Materials to create this decor

- a 22 x 18 cm bevelled door plate (and a clip to attach to the back)
- 3 salvaged test tubes (7.5 cm high)
- 2 or 3 wooden stars (7.5 cm span), thin and light
- 2 scoubidou threads: 1 white and 1 grey
- brass wire
- fine black seed beads (ideally on wire), or nylon thread
- double-sided tape and strong glue
- white, black or silver metallic acrylic paint
- snow relief paste
- cracking gel

Drawings of the N and the stripes to be painted

Christmas N drawing
Using a grey pencil, draw a capital N, centering it horizontally but leaving a 5 cm space at the top (the stars will fill this space). From this line, draw a 5 cm high strip, then a 2 cm strip. From the bottom, draw a horizontal line 4 cm from the edge.

Plain and crackle paints

painting on frame
Apply snow-effect paste to the top of the wooden plate. Paint the top strip in black, then the next strip and the bottom strip in grey. Also paint one side of the stars gray. Painting the crackle: don't hesitate to do a crackle test to check that the crackle gel and acrylic paints work well together. The thickness and direction of the coats will create larger or smaller, more or less pronounced cracks. Always using a brush, apply an even layer of crackle gel to the wide black stripe (the paint must be dry). Paint in a single, horizontal stroke, evenly ... or not, depending on the desired effect: the thicker the layer of gel, the larger the cracks.
Once the gel has dried and become transparent but still tacky, apply white paint to the black strip in a single, vertical brushstroke (well loaded): cracks may even form immediately, while others appear as the gel dries. Here again, the thickness of this layer of paint determines the formation of cracks.

Paint the top part (on the snow effect paste) and the middle part between the grey bands in white. Paint the "N" in black (don't hesitate to apply a second coat of paint) and the other side of the stars.

Making soliflores

soliflor tubes
Each tube is covered with a length of double-sided tape, leaving 1 cm free for the bottom of the tube.
Two tubes are covered by the scoubidou (in white and grey): the starting point of the scoubidou (which can come off more easily) will be glued to the frame and thus held firmly in place.
Wrap the scoubidou around the tube
The last tube is covered with black seed beads (to be threaded onto nylon wire if not already on wire): wrap directly around the tube. Glue each tube harmoniously onto the "bars" of the "N".

Making star flowers

Christmas decoration star flower
Pass the brass wire through the remaining pieces of scoubidou to shape them. Put 2 holes in each wooden star. Begin by folding the end and winding the end of the scoubidou on itself.
Christmas Scoubidou
Wrap the whole scoubidou around a pen: it will take the shape of a spiral as it springs up. Then thread a star (either on the visible black side, or on the grey side). Place this funny flower in a soliflore and arrange the length, cutting if necessary the part that protrudes from the star beyond 1 cm. In place of the third star, a sailor's knot has been made with the white scoubidou: it's called "the sailor's cross" and appears, with its story, in Guy Franquet's method of decorative knots. the knot is simple, based on the Lovers' Lake knot, and lends an airy, foliage-like, poetic note to this flower-star ensemble. The picture can now be hung on the wall, waiting for the Christmas party, or placed on the table for a black-and-white Christmas...
