Making a Lovers' Lake knot

Lakes" was the name given to various cords in the past. By extension - love traps? - the knots known as "lovers' lakes" were traditionally used by sailors to propose marriage: they would send the design shown here in a sketch, WITHOUT TIGHTENING IT, to the girl of their dreams. If the girl returned the tightly-tied lake, it evoked two intertwined hearts, as shown here. This meant that the wedding had to be prepared as soon as possible. If, alas, the lacs came back loosened... but you get the idea.

There are different types of lovers' lakes. This was the most commonly used. It's simple to make, as it's made up of two half-knots, the second of which is primed inside the first. Combined in various ways, half-knots can be used to create a wide range of decorative motifs and Chinese knots. They are also widely used in macramé.
