Macramé: the flat knot

Macramé is an age-old handicraft whose basic techniques are easy to learn and popular with everyone.
The aim here is to learn the overhand knot.
This basic macramé knot can be used to create other knots, making the overhand knot the essential basis of macramé.
This knot is also the basis for macramé bracelets such as Tibetan bracelets with ethnic beads, or Shamballas bracelets where large rhinestone beads are threaded through the bracelet.
Materials required for macramé:
  • a support for the threads: a simple pencil or a foam board on which you place a thread (to which you attach the supporting thread with 2 pins)
  • threads: cords, laces, cotton, waxed cotton or leather: each thread will have its own effect

  • beads made of wood, rhinestones, glass, decorative, round or original shapes
  • ...

Step 2 For a flat knot assembly, prepare 2 wires side by side: this gives you 4 strands. Role of the strands: the inner strands are passive strands; they are not used, and in the end are hardly visible.
Thread colors: to begin with, it's easier to work with 2 lengths of thread of different colors (if you make a mistake, it's obvious!). Begin by passing the right-hand thread over the 2 middle threads (the passive threads).

Step 3 The left-hand strand passes over this strand, then under the middle strands: it must exit (red arrow) into the loop formed by the right-hand strand and the middle strand.
By repeating steps 2 and 3 several times in succession: you'll get a nice twist! To obtain a flat assembly, you need to link an inverted knot, as in step 4.

Step 4 Pass the left-hand thread (now pink) over the 2 middle strands. Then pass the right-hand strand over this thread and under the 2 fixed strands. Pull up through the loop.

Step 5 Here's the pattern obtained by linking 2 flat knots. A chain of flat knots is called a "barrette". The outer strands are therefore the ones that "work", they are used more and quickly become shorter than the passive middle strands. The trick is to alternate strands when changing patterns.
