Chinese knot for an original necklace

This knot belongs to the family of Planar Knots (so called because they lie on a plane - who'd have thought!). The majority of Chinese knots are planar knots. Many of them can be made with either one or two strands. Such is the case with the one shown here.

Starting from the bottom, create a loop with the solid strand, the end pointing upwards.

Examine the strand symbolized by the black line: it creates a figure identical to the first strand, but reversed by mirror effect. From the top, lead it as shown.

The same knotting can be done with a single strand. In this case, make the first pass, leaving enough thread to pass around your head, then, as shown by the dotted line, complete the knotting with this same strand in place of the second.
Preferably use a fairly stiff thread that will easily hold the pattern in place.
