Creating a macramé wall decoration

Fancy a little bohemian corner in your living room? Like a pretty, airy rope wall hanging? Forget the giant loom and watch this step-by-step explanation of a macramé hanging decoration.
Macramé tapestry

Making a tapestry

Unlike most macramé wall hangings, this one is very simple. It's an ideal model for beginners, and will have a small effect. It doesn't require a ton of different knots, counting rows or measuring spaces. You can always add more technical knot patterns if you want to make it more elaborate, but you don't have to.

This model is simple, with a single knot and subtle tassels for the lower part, it imitates the look of those woven wall hangings but with cotton rope instead of wool and requiring a loom. Much faster to make!

Since this wall macramé is relatively simple, it's perfect as a gift! You can make yours as small or as large as you like, simply by adjusting the length of the cord and the number of rows. The large model takes about 3 hours from start to finish, but a small model could take less than an hour. If you're planning to make a few for Christmas presents, for example, it's best to stick to the smaller ones, as you're likely to tire yourself out along the way.

On the other hand, if you're an avid knitter, you know how meditative the process can be. Just settle down with a cup of tea and some good music or a good TV show. It might even help you relax after a long day at the office.

What equipment do I need?

Supplies : - Wooden dowel or driftwood branch - 1 to 2 spools of special macramé rope, 3 mm thick. - A pair of scissors

Making wall macramé: step 1

First, cut a piece of rope about 1 to 2 inches longer than your ankle and tie a knot at each end. This will be the rope to hang your decoration from when you're finished, or during the manufacturing process: it's easier to tie with the work hanging.

Step 2

Tying the first knots
Next, it's time to measure the rope you'll need to make your tapestry. For a large hanging, cut 24 pieces of macramé cord, each about 300 cm long.

The length will depend on the overall size of your piece, so for a smaller piece, cut shorter pieces of rope.

Step 3

Tying lark's knots
To tie the rope to your ankle, fold each piece of rope in half. Place this folded loop under your ankle. Then pass the cut ends of the string over the ankle and through the loop (this is called a lark's knot). Tug firmly.
Do the same for all remaining pieces of string.

Step 4

To make the wall macramé, we're going to use square knots to form a kind of mesh.
Starting at the far left, take the first four pieces of string and separate them so that you have one on the left, two in the middle and one on the right.

Step 5

Take the left-hand string and bend it so that it forms a "4" over the two middle strings, and under the right-hand string.
Bring the right-hand string under the two middle strings and over the left-hand string.

Pull firmly.

Step 6

Now, using the same four ropes, tie the same knot again, starting with the cord on the far right. Take the right-hand cord and bend it to form a "4" over the two middle cords and under the left-hand cord. Bring the left-hand cord under the two middle cords and over the right-hand cord. Pull firmly. This makes an overhand knot.

Continue tying knots all along the top row.

Step 7

Move on to the second row. This time, you want to skip the first two ropes on the far left when you tie your knots.
Tie knots along the entire length.
When you reach the end, you'll have two untied ropes left on the right too.

Step 8

Move on to the third row and tie your knots using the first four ropes again (as you did for the first row).

Continue this alternating pattern until you reach about half the length of your piece.

Step 9

Now you can start tapering your wall macramé to a point. Skip the first two rows on the left and tie flat knots along the entire length.
Move on to the next row.
Skip the first four rows on the left, tie your overhand knots and skip the last four rows on the right.

Step 10

Continue row by row, skipping six, eight, ten strings (left and right) until only one overhand knot remains in the center.
Cut the fringe at the bottom to form a V.

Step 11

Tassels have been added for extra substance, but are optional.
To make them, wrap the cord around your hand or a piece of cardboard about 20 times. Remove the looped cord and tie the top firmly with a piece of string. Trim the ends as required.

Step 12

Attach pompons to the bottom of your wall hanging using macramé cord. Trim any excess.

Your macramé wall hanging is finished!

Be happy :)
