Fabric face mask with matching headband

A double tutorial to easily make a washable fabric mask and a practical crossed hairband to hold the elastics sideways without going behind the ears: a comfortable, stylish and, of course, useful set!
Here are the materials needed to create a woman's set and a girl's set. The use of a sewing machine is not compulsory, as the seams to be made are reduced to a minimum for quick and easy manufacture (while being based, concerning alternative masks, on the recommendations of AFNOR in March 2020).

I've already made the various alternative mask models possible, and this is the one that's the quickest to make, while having a more attractive and resistant finish.

Protective mask and hairband tutorial

Supplies

For an Adult mask
- a 20 x 20 cm square in an attractive 100% cotton fabric
- a 20 x 20 cm square in 100% cotton fabric
- elastic (approx. 6mm wide), 2 pieces of 25 cm each

For a headband
- 2 rectangles of 45 cm x 12.5 cm
- one small rectangle, 25 cm x 7 cm
- elastic (width 15 mm) 20 cm
Fora child's mask
- one 18 x 18 cm square in 100% cotton
- one 18 x 18 cm square in 100% cotton
- elastic (approx. 6mm wide), 2 pieces of 21 cm

For a child's headband
- 2 rectangles of 42 cm x 12.5 cm
- one small rectangle, 20 cm x 7 cm
- elastic (width 15 mm) 17 cm

A 25 cm width of 140 cm fabric, such as Liberty, is sufficient to make this double set of face mask + headband for adults and children. The fabric must be very tightly woven to be more effective (placed under bright light, it must filter it well).

Sew the fabric mask

Assemble and pin the 2 squares right sides together. Stitch the top and bottom 1 cm from the edges.
Sew EAP mask
Tie a knot at each end of the elastic. Place an elastic on one side, leaving a knot at each end, and pin in place. Sew from the elastic to the other (red line in photo opposite). Do the same on the other side, but leave a 4 cm opening in the middle to turn the mask inside out.
Turning the fabric mask inside out

Turn the mask over. Pull out the 4 corners (by pulling on the elastic bands).
Marking the mask folds
The mask can be ironed. Next, shape and pin the horizontal folds (on the back of the mask, the folds touch).
Stitch each side of the mask to within 5 mm of the edge, from the elastic (just below) to the other (so up to 6 layers of fabric per side - the sewing machine is a great help here).

Protective mask for adults and children
The mask measures 18 cm by 10 cm for the adult model and 16 cm by 8 cm for the children's model (11 years).

This design was inspired by Madalena's idea of attaching the elastic bands upside down, see her tutovideo here.

Sew the crossed headband

This idea of placing a button on each side of the headband is from Ellie and Mac, but the headband model presented here is different, as it's made from 100% cotton fabric (non-stretchable) to match the mask.

Hairbands for women and girls
Hairband tutorial

Fold each rectangle in half, pin and sew 1 cm from the edge. Turn them over. You now have 3 tubes.
cross-band tutorial
Place the elastic band in the small tube (with the help of a safety pin). Imbricate the large tubes (as shown in the photo). Turn each edge of the large tubes inwards by about 1 cm.
Sew elastic headband
Place the elasticated tube in a large tube and fold the protruding edges over the elasticated tube. Do the same with the other tube. Pin and hand-stitch this nice thickness of fabric 5mm from the edge. Do the same for the other side. Sew a large button on each side of the headband on the two tube shoulders and about 4 cm on either side of the elasticated tube: the button must be more than 1 cm above the ear so that the mask's elastic, when passing over it, sits well above the ear (try this before sewing).
