Cross
stitch
|
Theeasiest way to embroider in cross-stitch is to stitch each cross next to | the other.A golden rule: always cross in the same direction! For faster, more elegant embroidery, work in a line. Make a line of half-stitches (diagonal crosses), then finish the crosses on the way back.

The
1/2 stitch
This is simply arow of half-stitches (as embroidered in cross-stitch) that you don't return to. The next row is stitched above or below the previous one, in order to embroider back and forth. 1/2 stitch is often used to mark a shadow, and in this case with a single thread.
Leaf shading is achieved with half cross stitch.

The
3/4 stitch
| This issimply a row of half-stitches (as embroidered in cross-stitch) that is not returned to. The next row is stitched above or below the previous one, in order to embroider back and forth. The 1/2 stitch is often used to mark a shadow, and in this case with a single thread. |
The
backstitch
Using the dash technique, stitch the outward stroke in front stitch, then the return stroke, filling in the spaces left by the outward stroke. This uses fewer threads and is easier. Caution: for regular lines, you need to insert the needle above the front stitch you've already made, and always bring it out underneath.
How to
start a counted-stitch project
Start by determining the center of your fabric: fold it into quarters and mark the center with a pin. Start your work in the middle of the diagram, which is often highlighted by bold black lines.
If the center is in a non-embroidered area, simply count the squares of fabric separating you from the embroidery area closest to the center to find your starting point.
Embroider according to the diagram and the basic principle: each square represents a cross-stitch and each symbol a different color.
The number of threads to be used is usually indicated on the grid. Generally, cross-stitch and knot-stitch are made with 2 strands, while stitch is made with 1 strand.
For gold thread, which is fragile, use small needles (30 cm) and take only one thread which you fold in half.
