Decorating a baptismal candle

Decorating the baptismal candle is a lovely personalized gift for the newly baptized. At the end of the ceremony, the newly baptized receives a candle, lit on the Paschal candle, traditionally by the godfather, and keeps it as a symbol of Christ's light

For the candle, choose a round, white candle of good length and diameter (at least 2.5 cm).

Paint decoration

You can decorate it with candle markers to write the baptized person's first name and the date of the big day. Before drawing on the candle, it's advisable to practice handling the paint bottle, as you'll need to maintain even pressure while drawing the letters. It's advisable to use special candle markers or water-based paints, and to avoid glitter glues containing solvents whose fumes can be toxic when the candle burns. Or simply do not decorate the top of the candle.

Since you're drawing freehand on a cylindrical support, you'll need to proceed in several stages, letting one side dry before writing on the other. In addition, the candle must be left flat to avoid any paint drips.

Rhinestone decoration

Rhinestone decoration on christening candle
A pretty effect to add to a candle: glue rhinestones on it, to reflect the light. The rhinestones can be used to complement the paint, as on our model. Please note: gluing rhinestones to a candle is a little more difficult than gluing them to fabric. This is because you're not working flat, but on a cylindrical support, and wax is not an absorbent material for glue. The rhinestones therefore tend to slip, but the glue will set quickly. It's time to place each rhinestone as it slides along, turning the candle in front of you to align and space them at regular intervals. Of course, the rhinestones must be glued with specific glue and not hot glue, which would melt the candle.

Collage decoration

Gluing paper (or paper napkins) is also a lovely way to decorate the candle.
Paper napkin patterns are ideal for this purpose. It's easy to use: just cut out the chosen pattern and keep only the top layer of the napkin.
Position the design on the candle (not on the top, which could burn off), and apply two coats of clear varnish at 10-minute intervals.
this will bond and protect the design.

A wide range of paper napkins is available in the Fournitures Créatives store.
