Making a brooch from carded wool
A pretty flower for broaching or sewing. You can embellish it with embroidery and pearls.

Material :
wool
  • felting
  • needle
  • foam
  • plate
  • for felting.

Making the flower base.

Carded wool felting
Take a large wick of red wool to form a square of about 15 x 15 cm.(photo 1) And start stitching on a line in the middle of the square to consolidate the fibers. Felting begins. This stitched area becomes flatter and harder. Fold the wick in 2 and stitch in the middle as described in the previous paragraph (photo 2). Fold in half again (photo 3). Then work the entire surface, staking all over to lightly join the fibers.

Shaping the flower base

Carded wool flower brooch: shaping
Grasp one side of the square (photo 4) and stitch to secure the wool. Do the same on the other 3 sides (photo 5) Pick well around the shape to obtain clean edges (photo 6). Turn the shape over and stitch all over to obtain a well-felted shape.

The petals

Making flower petals from carded wool
Take an 8 x 3 cm roving. Start stitching in the middle to consolidate the fibers and fold the wick in half (photos 1 and 2). Stitch at the fold to assemble the fibers (photo 3). Rab the edges of the shape lightly and stitch to start forming the petal (photo 4). Stitch on both sides of the shape over the entire surface to obtain a well-felted petal (photo 5).

The heart of the flower

Flower heart in carded wool
Take an orange-sized wick (photo 1).  Lengthen the wick and begin to prick slightly lengthwise to consolidate the fibers and fold the wick in half (photo 2). Wrap the wick (photo 3) and prick to obtain a ball shape (photo 3). Roll the ball using the flat of your hand.

Assembly

Carded wool flower brooch: assembly
Take the 2 petals and cut them in half (photo 1).  Prick the cut edges a little to fix the fibers. Fix each petal to the center of the flower base by pricking (photo 2 and 3). Pick the heart of the flower in the center of the flower. Stitch all around the heart to secure the fibers (photo 4). Here's our flower (photo 5). You can now sew pearls or border the petals to continue decorating your flower and mount it as a brooch, by sewing a brooch support to the back of the flower.
